How to Earn Rewards Points

Marriott Rewards Points Earn Rates

Before we get into the detail of the different ways you can earn Marriott Rewards points, we want to first clarify how much each point is worth.

Based on our research, we value a Marriott Rewards point at 1.0 cent. That means if you spend a dollar to earn a rewards point, then you are essentially getting 1.0% of value back.

Here are the different ways you can earn points:

2 rewards point per dollar spent on everyday purchases (ie. you’re getting 2.0% of your spend back in Marriott Rewards points value). For former SPG members, this is a devaluation from what you’re used to with Starwood. However, Marriott has to get their money back somehow with the Starwood acquisition and unfortunately devaluing rewards earn rates is an easy lever to pull.

6 rewards points per dollar spent at Marriott hotels (ie. you’re getting 6.0% of your spend back in Marriott Rewards points value). Don’t forget that the Marriott collection now includes all SPG hotels as well!

How to Redeem Rewards Points

Redeeming Marriott Rewards Points

Marriott Bonvoy is a great rewards program because the hotel chain has so many properties that cover a wide range of price points. Regardless of where in the world you are traveling to, chances are you can find a Marriott hotel nearby.

The most popular redemption options are below:

Hotel Stays. At its root Marriott is a hotel company so it should comes as no surprise that you’ll maximize your points value if you redeem them for hotels stays. A hotel stay can cost you anywhere from 5,000 points to over 100,000 points depending on the category and season. However based on the redemption rate chart, you should be able to book a middle-of-the-road hotel anytime of the year for about 25,000.

Marriott Bonvoy Moments. This redemption option allows you to either redeem a fixed amount of points for a particular experience, or bid your points for some truly once-in a lifetime opportunities. We actually highly recommend checking both the redemption and bidding options as they do have some great deals for a wide range of points.

An example of the redemption option, you can attend the Boston Wine Riot for 7,500 points – and this includes a crash course on wine. Another example of the redemption option would be watching a Lakers game from a luxury suite for 105,000 points.

The points auction is where the fun can truly be had, and where the most exclusive experiences are found. In our experience, not that many people actually go an bid so you have a decent chance of getting something for below market value. An example of an auction item would be lunch with Michelin Star chef Marco Sacco that has a starting bid of 15,000 points. Another example would be a NY Times Square VIP new year’s experience including a two night hotel stay that has a winning bid of over 500,000 points.

The current Marriott Bonvoy Moments can be found here.

Point Transfers. Transferring your points to another program doesn’t provide great value, but can be useful if you’re just a little short on points for redeeming through one of your other loyalty program. We have recently transferred some points from Marriott to American Airlines so that we can redeem a free flight reward. The most up to date transfer partners can be found here.
