Introduction

What the Citi Prestige Visa is all about

The Citi Prestige Visa is an innovative travel rewards credit card that competes head-to-head with other heavyweights such as the American Express Platinum and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Headlining the long list of benefits on this card is the famed “Citi Prestige 4th Night Free” bonus which provides value that is unmatched by any of its competitors. With Citibank, you can rest assured that you have the backing of a massive financial institution, and the flexibility of Visa’s payment network.

Read on to learn more about how to earn/redeem points as well as the other perks that come with this premium credit card.

How to Earn Rewards Points

Citi ThankYou Points Earn Rates

Before we get into the detail of the different ways you can earn Citi ThankYou points, we want to first clarify how much a ThankYou point is worth.

Based on our research, we value a Citi ThankYou point at 1.6 cents. That means if you spend a dollar to earn a rewards point, then you are essentially getting 1.6% of value back.

Here are the different ways you can earn points:

1 rewards point per dollar spent on everyday purchases (ie. you’re getting 1.6% of your spend back in ThankYou points value).

2 reward points per dollar spent on entertainment such as going to the movies or eating out (ie. you’re getting 3.2% of your spend back in ThankYou points value). This will be valid until August 31, 2019 at which point the category will be removed and all “entertainment” dollars will count as normal everyday spend.

3 rewards points per dollar spent for hotels and cruise lines (ie. you’re getting 4.8% of your spend back in ThankYou points value).

5 reward points per dollar spent on airlines, travel agencies and restaurants (ie. you’re getting 8% of your spend back in ThankYou points value). This is unbelievable value, and a good move by Citi to try and secure your airfare and dining spend.

How to Redeem Rewards Points

Redeeming Citi ThankYou Points

Citi ThankYou points offer redemption flexibility directly with Citi as well as a strong collection of transfer partners.

The most popular redemption options are below:

Cash Back Redemption: You can redeem your rewards points for a statement credit at a conversion rate of 0.5 cents per point. This means if you redeem 1,000 points you will get $5 back. This is not a good value for your points so we do not recommend using this even though it’s the simplest redemption option.

Gift Card Redemption: You can redeem your ThankYou points for gift cards at a conversion rate of 1.0 cent per point. This means if you redeem 1,000 points you will get a $10 gift card. This option gives a reasonable rate of return, but is still not the best use of your points.

Airfare and Hotels: You can redeem your ThankYou points for on flights and hotels at a rate of 1.0 cent per point through Citi’ Rewards Portal. This means if you redeem 1,000 points you will get a $10 back in travel rewards. Compared to the other premium cards in this segment this redemption value is weak for this category.

Transfers to Partner Programs: As previously mentioned, we value a City ThankYou point at 1.6 cents. The best way to get at least that value is to transfer your rewards points to one of Citi’s partner programs. Transferring to partner programs can get you over 1.6 cents back per ThankYou point depending on what you are booking. This redemption option takes a bit of research, but is well worth the effort if you’re looking to redeem your points for long-haul flights.

The best partner programs are:

  • Ethiad Guest
  • LifeMiles
  • TrueBlue
  • Virgin Atlantic

Additional Benefits and Features

What else does the Citi Prestige get you?

The Citi Prestige Visa comes with many of the perks you would expect from a premium travel card, and adds in innovative offerings that are hard to find with other credit cards.

Our favorite benefits of the Citi Prestige include:

  • The City Prestige 4th night free award. This amazing benefits gives you a 4th night free at any hotel when you book a minimum of four nights. So if you’re staying at an upscale hotel that charges $1000 a night, then you’re getting a $1000 benefit with the free night! The only wrinkles are that you have to book the hotel through Citi in order to use the 4th night free award, and you can only use this benefit twice a year. This means you’ll have to use either their online portal (ThankYou.com) or call the Citi Prestige Concierge.
  • A $100 fee credit for Global Entry and $85 towards TSA Pre Check. This can be redeemed once every five years, and is perfect for the frequent traveler. With Global Entry or TSA Pre, you will be able to expedite your way through airport security.
  • A $250 travel credit. This credit is given by calendar year so you can redeem this multiple times within 12 months (eg. if you get the card in November of this year the credit will reset in January of next year). This credit can be applied against eligible travel charges such as hotels, car rentals, and taxis.
  • Access to Priority Pass Lounges. The tier that you are enrolled in is the Priority Pass Select tier. A word of warning though if you’ve never had Priority Pass before. The individual lounges in the network have the right to refuse entry if they are too busy so access is not always guaranteed.
  • Access to the Citi Prestige Concierge Service. The Citi Prestige Concierge treats their customers extremely well, and will do their best to fulfill all reasonable (and legal) requests. In terms of access to top restaurants and events they are still a bit behind the AMEX Platinum Concierge and on par with the Visa Infinite Concierge.
  • Robust travel insurance coverage. The comprehensive insurance package includes everything you would expect from a premium travel card: travel accident, travel medical, and rental vehicle among many others. One interesting coverage that isn’t found in many other cards is the “Wallet Guard”. This coverage will reimburse you for up to $500 for loss of wallet due to snatch theft or robbery.
